Houston is full of creative types and all around great events

Innovative pop-up party recreates hidden gems from Mexico City's La Cucaracha Cocktail Club By

Pastry War La Cucaracha Cocktail Club menu
Cocktail pop-ups come and go. Whether prompted by a visiting bartender from out of town or the introduction of a new spirit to Houston, these events typically only draw the most devoted drinkers. However, The Pastry Warhas something a little more unusual planned for Wednesday night that should attract a wider audience.
Led by owner Bobby Heugel, the staff at the popular downtown mezcaleria will recreate the entire menu from Mexico City's La Cucaracha Cocktail Club, which flourished as a place American tourists could go to get a drink during Prohibition. After falling into what he calls an online "wormhole" of vintage cocktail menus, Heugel tells CultureMap he was immediately drawn to La Cucaracha's menu with its promise of "English-speaking personnel" and "fancy cockroach" logo.
"I had heard of the La Cucaracha Cocktail Club before, but I couldn’t remember why. It turns out the reason was because it created the Mexican Firing Squad, which is a classic cocktail we’ve had on the menu at Anvil for five years," Heugel says. "Frankly, in a lot of ways it’s really cute. First of all it’s in English in a foreign country, which is extremely rare, but the English is not always perfect. There’s funny things like maraschino is misspelled the way you’d say it in Spanish with a double 'r.' You’ve got a Pisco punch with no Pisco."
As the staff investigated the menu and began figuring out proportions for recipes, they turned up both hidden gems and a couple of clunkers. Of those, Heugel says he's most excited about the Mexican 75, which blends Citadelle gin with vermouth, apricot liqueur, pineapple juice, and grenadine. Fans of the French 75 cocktail will immediately notice the absence of champagne in the Mexican version served at La Cucaracha, but Heugel promises the drink is "so good" that it will probably find a spot on the Pastry War's permanent menu.
On the other hand, Heugel calls the Blue Moon — an Aviation-style cocktail of gin, creme de violette, and absinthe — "awful."
More than any specific recipe, Heugel says he enjoyed the process of reading the menu and thinking about how drinks like the Clover Club, which was originally developed in Philadelphia, made it to Mexico City without the aid of the Internet or media devoted to drinks and dining.
"Would someone pass someone else a cocktail book? Would someone tell someone what a recipe they had at another bar was like," Heugel says. "It’s almost like cocktail recipe telephone where over time it morphed into this other thing."
Heugel also noticed that drinks with similar ingredients are spread out on different parts of the menu so that they don't appear to be too similar. He made similar decisions when Anvil opened and says he feels a connection to those bartenders from the part.
"We’re just 80 years apart, but it’s the exact same job. You can feel the decisions they made, the order they put the drinks in, why they put them in that order, the diversity," he says
The events kicks off when The Pastry War opens at 4 pm. Getting there early is probably a good idea. In addition to the drinks, the bar has printed up 100 T-shirts with the "fancy cockroach" logo, and they're sure to go quickly.

The Houston Galleria Ain't No Punk When It Comes To Shopping

Saks Fifth Avenue ramps up the Luxury level with a modern twist at new Galleria store By

Saks Fifth Avenue Galleria store rendering

There's lots in store at the new Saks Fifth Avenue in The Galleria, including a large cocktail bar on the first floor, a spiral staircase leading to the second floor, a women's department featuring 22 designer boutiques, a cosmetics department with 15 specialized brands, an expanded shoe salon and a restaurant with a private entrance.
Saks Fifth Avenue Galleria store rendering restaurant
"It's going to be a very, very special store," vice president and general manager Bobby Dees told a gathering of the Houston fashion press at a dinner at Fleming's Tuesday night to reveal details of the new Saks.
With so many boutiques within the new store, "it's almost like a museum with a modern twist, with elements of color and surprise," Dees told CultureMap. "I think it's going to be very inviting and stimulating to the consumer. The new store represents the best Saks has to offer in store design and it brings a new element of shopping in Houston. This is a very important market for us."
The two-story, 210,000-square-foot store, currently under construction, will officially open on April 28 with an official ribbon cutting following a VIP dinner co-hosted by Town and Country magazine and Houston Grand Opera on April 26 and a cocktail reception on April 27 benefiting MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Erdem Moralioglu, the designer of the hip ready-to-wear brand Erdem, will be the special guest at the opening festivities.
The current Saks store will close on April 20 at 6 pm as workers move merchandise into the new store next door. "It's the biggest move of this type ever done at Saks," Dees said. An additional 40 sales staff will be hired for the new store, he added.

Other features Dees touted are:
  • The men's department will be moved to the first floor of the new store, along with women's shoes, handbags, jewelry and cosmetics.
  • The cosmetics department will encompass 20,000 square feet, with such boutiques as Kilian, Chanel and Gucci (one of only five Gucci beauty spots in North America).

  • Among the expanded offerings is a Christian Louboutin boutique, the first outside of the Saks New York flagship store.
  • The Fifth Avenue Club, which features personal shoppers and private dressing rooms, will have more of a residential feel, with sofas and chairs instead of a desk at the entrance and eighth fitting rooms. "It's not about how much money you spend; it's a service for everyone," Dees said.
  • The expanded women's designer department on the second floor will include boutiques featuring such noted designers as Alexander McQueen, Gucci, Dries van Noten, Azzedine Alaia, Altuzarra and Proenza Schouler.
  • Valet parking will be available at the Westheimer entrance, with underground parking underneath the store, accessed either at Westheimer or Sage.
Once the new Saks opens, the current store will be demolished to make way for an expanded corridor with 35 stores and four destination restaurants, said Galleria director of markeing Andrew Huang.
Other parts of the massive mall are undergoing renovation, including the installation of gleaming new white marble floors in much of Galleria I and II and plans for new escalators and an opened-up gathering space near Tiffany & Co. and Neiman Marcus.
Dees said the Houston Saks store currently ranks No. 3 in sales among the 38 stores in 22 states, behind New York City and Beverly Hills "and our goal is to overtake the Beverly Hills store."

Will the Housing Market in Houston Stall?

Real Estate Center At Texas A&M: Is 2016 A Good Year To Buy Or Sell A House?

source: The Katy News

OLLEGE STATION, Jan. 28, 2016 – While the Texas housing market has been going strong the last few years, it’s likely to cool off some this year—but now is still a good time to buy or sell a home, says the chief economist for the Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University.
Low interest rates make it an especially appealing time to be a buyer, notes Dr. Jim Gaines, adding that the biggest challenge is the lack of selection.
“The only reason that it might not be a good year is some buyers may have a hard time finding what they want,” Gaines observes. “We still have a shortage of existing inventory being listed for sale.”
Last month, Texas had a 3.1-month housing inventory. Center authorities consider 6.5 months a balanced market.
“You’ll have to work very closely with an agent or someone who is close to the market on a day-to-day basis, because in many of our markets properties are being grabbed up almost as soon as they come up for sale,” Gaines points out, “often on the same day and with multiple offers.”
In other words, once you find a home you like, be prepared to act quickly.
This is good news for sellers, who will probably have no trouble getting the price they want — at least for the first half of the year.
“I think we’re going to see a slowdown in the housing market this year, but the market’s not going to stall,” Gaines says.
The median price for a home in Texas last month was $201,900, up $8,200 from the previous month and up $9,900 from a year ago.
“The past four years we’ve had this tremendous imbalance between the demand for housing and the supply being offered for sale,” Gaines observes. “What I think will happen is the demand is going to slow down, and builders will keep supplying because they’ll find there’s still a very good market for new homes. People will decide now’s a good time to buy or sell, maybe before interest rates go up. The market will end up more balanced than it’s been.
“Buyers will start finding that home prices won’t go up as fast and maybe some bargains will come out there.”

Do you want a $20,000 home of your very own, this can totally happen?!! I can help with that.

You’ll Want This $20,000 Home More Than Your Own BY LORIE LIEBIG

How do you build a home that’s comfortable, safe and affordable for those under the poverty line? Students enrolled in Auburn University’s Rural Studio program have been trying to answer that question for the past 10 years.
Every semester, students have created prototypes of homes that would be an affordable and wise investment both for the homeowner and the construction team that’s hired to build it.
This year, the Rural Studio team completed their first two one-bedroom houses in Serenbe, Ala. that cost only $14,000 each to build. The homes were built with low-cost materials and unique construction techniques that allowed the construction to be completed at such a low cost.
house
“We’re in a kind of experimental stage of the program, where we’re really trying to find out the best practice of getting this house out into the public’s hands,” Rusty Smith, associate director of Rural Studio, told Fast Company. “Really this first field test was to find out all the things that we didn’t know, and to find out all of the kind of wrong assumptions that we had made, and really find out how we had screwed up, honestly.”
Some of the challenges the team faced included getting permits from local officials, who had a difficult time applying their current codes to the team’s unique construction techniques. Although there have been many challenges, Smith says they made sure to keep an emphasis on making the home as comfortable and stylish as possible.
Fast Company
“When was the last time you were driving down the street by an affordable housing project and you thought, ‘Boy, I really wish I lived in one of those for myself,'” Smith says. “The goal of 20K House is really to design a house that’s affordable, that anybody could have—and that anybody would want.”
Fast Company
Fast Company
Eventually, the group hopes to release a detailed plan that will instruct readers on how to build their own home, step by step. Although they say they are currently behind schedule, they hope to get the plans out as soon as possible in order to help Americans build their own low-cost housing.
I would love to be your Realtor. If you are looking land to buy to build or simply a starter home, I can help.

Houston’s Top High Schools with the Best Teachers

by James McClister

Homebuyers want to live in a nice neighborhood, and when homebuyers have a child, “nice neighborhood” translates to “wherever the good schools are.” Thanks to Niche, providing that information to clients is now easier than ever for agents.

In its 2016 High Schools with the Best Teachers in America list, the online ranking and review site Niche compiled stats on parent and student satisfaction, academics, salary, absenteeism, the percentage of inexperienced faculty and the ratio of students to teachers, to determine which schools, metro by metro, employed the best teachers. (Niche’s full methodology)

In the Houston metro area, Carnegie Vanguard High School topped Niche’s local list with an academics grade of “A+,” an average teacher salary of nearly $51,000 and a 17-to-one student-teacher ratio. Teachers at Carnegie were also well reviewed by parents and students who were surveyed for the report, receiving a cumulative 4.1 out of 5 rating.

To see Houston’s full top 25 high schools with the best teachers, refer to our table below.
